J. Rana, DVM, MVSc

Practice Owner and Veterinarian

Dr. Rana graduated from the Veterinary College in 1989 and he completed his Masters in Veterinary Pathology in 1991. He worked in the Veterinary College in teaching and research positions for 3 years before he decided to work in a private veterinary practice. In 1997, he completed his clinical internship at prestigious Purdue University in the U.S.A. and then moved back to beautiful British Columbia. He worked for some time at Granville Island Veterinary Hospital and Vetcetera Pet Hospital in Vancouver before moving to Lansdowne Animal Hospital in October 1998. He has owned this practice since 2000.

Dr. Rana loves all kind of pets. Actually, Dr. Rana decided to become a veterinarian in high school when he saw his own dog being treated by a veterinarian at a teaching veterinary hospital. Although he lost his dog at that time due to a serious illness (Parvovirus), he decided to save many others by becoming a veterinarian. He has a special interest in soft tissue surgery, dermatology and clinical pathology.

His hobbies are sports, listening to music and travelling. In his spare time, he also likes reading veterinary journal articles to keep himself up to date with the latest developments in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Harinder S. Chatrath
Associate Veterinarian

Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana – 1984

Dr. Harinder S. Chatrath has loved animals for as long as he can remember. Growing up in the peaceful suburbs of Eastern Punjab, India, he spent much of his time on the family farm-farming, caring for dairy cattle, spotting wildlife, and exploring the riverbanks nearby. These early experiences helped shape his lifelong commitment to animal health and well-being.
During this time, he shared a special bond with his childhood companion, Tomi—a loyal Alsatian (German Shepherd) who was always by his side on the farm. Tomi’s passing left a lasting impact on him and deepened his emotional connection to animals. It was also around this time that he adopted his first three Dobermans-an experience that further strengthened his love for dogs and gave him a personal appreciation for the human-animal bond.

After receiving his veterinary degree from Punjab Agricultural University in 1984, Dr. Chatrath began his career with Nestlé India, working in veterinary and dairy development. He later returned to his hometown to practice general medicine at the local veterinary hospital.
Over the years, he developed a special interest in canine and feline medicine, cardiology, and building long-term relationships with pets and their families.

In 2002, Dr. Chatrath moved to Canada, and in 2023, he joined the Lansdowne Animal Hospital team, where he continues to practice with dedication and compassion. He also enjoys mentoring new veterinary graduates and sharing the knowledge he has gained over decades of experience. Dr. Chatrath is proud to share the profession with his son, who is also a veterinarian-carrying forward the family’s passion for animal care into the next generation.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Chatrath loves gardening, traveling, reading and spending time with family and friends, and discovering new restaurants. At home, he’s happiest surrounded by his beloved family who brings energy, joy, and constant companionship to his life.

"Dragon" - Our Cat Angel in Kitty Heaven (1997-2017)

Dragon was a 20.5 years old very handsome cat. Dragon had been with us since 1998. He was a rescue cat through Richmond Homeless Cats Shelter (presently known as Richmond Animal Protection Society). He was a celebrity in his own right. Clients often stopped by just to be greeted and Dragon never disappointed his adoring fans! Sadly, we had to say goodbye to him in summer of 2017 after a long, happy life. He was the best cat ever. He will be always remembered and will remain a part of our hospital.
